How many banks use India's UPI?

703 banks run on UPI, India's public payment rail, as of 2026. Close to half of the world's real-time payments now move on this single system.

UPI is public infrastructure: a single free rail any bank or app can plug into, which is why it became the default way India pays.

Built in 2016, it went from nothing to the busiest real-time payment system in the world.
