Invisible Giant

The distribution rail under the informal corner shop

The corner shop, finally on the grid.

By capsrow · Updated July 2026

The Global South does not formalise the corner shop. It builds the rail that lets the corner shop scale as it is.

The largest store network in Africa has no storefront chain - it is a million corner shops nobody had built a supply line for.

In Lagos, Sabi and OmniRetail turned the phone into the wholesaler for the informal retailer. Some 250,000 users trade through Sabi, while OmniRetail restocks more than 150,000 informal shops across 12 cities, connecting 145 manufacturers and over 5,800 distributors straight to the kiosk on the corner.

The decision that mattered: build the restock rail, do not ask the corner shop to become a supermarket.

The Global South builds the infrastructure that lets the informal economy scale as it is.
